Siva Yogaswami speaks of work

Thank you for sharing these thoughts. I firmly believe that one has to work hard for his own emancipation and peace. Putting your heart and soul and delving deeply into the work concerned is yoga itself.It is our Dharma too and there is no better satisfaction than a job well done.

Proust lately

“Let us leave pretty women to men without imagination.”

At the outset I would like to imagine that Proust was someone who thought that the beauty he saw in the physical world (women ) and other manifestations of nature or art as the unique beauty, which only he could appreciate.

To phrase it better, he might have felt that a lot of beauty went unnoticed and unappreciated where it was due because of lack of better imagination .

He might have meant no Ill-will towards the popular beauties who were fancied during his time.

But as a man who prided his own intellect ,he might have felt himself equipped with the sixth sense of discerning the kind of beauty which was unseen and unknown to others .

One can say that the parameters of beauty are so fluid that they cannot be judged in one physical state.
What one looks ten years back may not be how he/she looks like now.what is beauty in one city may not be worth noticing in the land across the ocean.

What is true is that there is beauty at all times in different forms in every being.It is seldom acknowledged though.

I wonder why people don’t compliment generously when something interests them keenly.

Few words of genuine appreciation may make Somebody’s day.
It is hard to believe that one is unable to find no amount of beauty in the other person. There is a matter of beauty in everyone and being unaware of it just means you are surrounded by people who  won’t let those things out into open.

While the quotation is somewhat degrading of the men who get fascinated by the conventionally accepted parameters of beauty and strive to catch the attentions of women who fit those parameters, it also adds value to those men who look beyond what everybody sees and strive to seek the depths than covering the length and breadth of it.

That is how the belief in society is strengthened .
There are men and women who would be genuine with their caresses , hugs and smiles.
Who would say something nice and mean it.
Who would look for the good parts in you and appreciate you for them .
And who would know that faults , blemishes and wrinkles are experiences and quirks which only make one better with age.

Glad to have come across this quote today.
When I am at the last stretch or have only few days to go before the main event – an exam , a performance, a deadline , a self set goal, a hobby , I start feeling drained and hopeless.
Anything that seems to be going fine but not showing the same in figures or on paper does that to me.
I have trained my mind to not take results seriously and I shrug them off to the extent of not even checking them sometimes.
That is at the cost of losing sight on my drawbacks and not acknowledging where I need improvement .
If only I could just go on pursuing something without the need for  result , without a pattern of devised learning curriculum and “important things you must read in order to clear this exam”.

My way of non-linear and chaotic learning is seldom beneficial when it comes to exams which follow a pattern.
I Start a topic, find something interesting in between  the lines , then check it out on Google and from there on I travel to some other zone ,far away from the main topic.
I do come back and read that topic again but the time that I lost wandering starts making me uneasy.
The fast speed internet is my best friend in my mental wanderings.
I tried the pomodora technique as suggested in the coursera course I took—

So I benefitted a lot from it.
For first 3 days at least, when I was highly enthusiastic about trying something new.

And I realized even though I never knew it had a name , I had done this earlier for a longer duration ,to clear my medical entrance examinations.
It wasn’t completely alien to me.
And yet the anxiety within me to check the phone or check something that sprang up in my mind was overwhelming now which was unlikely at 18 years of age.

So now I am back to square one and even though my attention span has increased and I am lot less distracted , the results have to reflect the same .
And with my non linear way I have reached the point B from point A even if I did not take the straight road.

I have experienced failure before and success too but it is so unpredictable that it is futile to assess your worth on the basis of one exam or a singular event /failure in life.
Nevertheless, self assessment and insight on what you did wrong is very important in order to not do the same thing again.
note to self – Never commit the same mistake twice .
At the end of it, as one of good friends told me

You only have one person you should be competing with.And that is you.

Well here’s to being better prepared ,by tomorrow !

Scent, Memory and Proust told me-3

But, when nothing subsists of an old past, after the death of people, after the destruction of things, alone, frailer but more enduring, more immaterial, more persistent, more faithful, smell and taste still remain for a long time, like souls, remembering, waiting, hoping, on the ruin of all the rest, bearing without giving way, on their almost impalpable droplet, the immense edifice of memory.

Have you ever thought of someone or any episode of your life (which made a special impact on you )and all that you remember is how it smelt at that time or what kind of taste it left in your mouth?

Advancements in Medical Physiology have proven that olfactory memory is retained for the longest time and that is our brain’s special way of remembering people and events.
I particularly remember all important events in my life with regard to the scent of air at that time(correlating with the season)
The scent of salty beach air, wet soil mixed with fallen leaves on a trek taken years ago, scent of aftershave worn by someone special, scent of oil in my grandmother’s hair, scent of gooseberries in my ancestral house and who can ever get over the scent of home made cookies .

We have known for some time that combining visual and auditory aids helps in better retention and learning.
If one requires a memory to be stored in his Neocortex , that is converted into long term memory , there has to be structural changes in the neurons.
Structural changes in turn are made possible by multiple revisions (rehearsals) and meaningful associations.

Therefore a scent which is encountered multiple times or holds association with something/someone meaningful has more chance of being converted into long term memory.

This could hold some importance in better learning and memory.
I remember retaining things better with roses in my room.
Even the scent of sandalwood and coffee helps me focus better.
Could there be more to these scents than just aromatherapy?
We know that certain scents have a calming effect and help in relaxation.
But can these be combined with other sensory inputs like visual(reading) and auditory (listening) for better consolidation of memory.?
This could be important in patients of Alzheimer’s disease who have difficulty retaining new information and learning new things .
It is the recent memory which is affected first the remote memory is affected much later.
The episodic type memory (event associated-a family trip, a party, birth, marriage) is affected the most.

This makes a lot of sense on a more practical day to day survival basis.
The instinctive guilt and subsequent time lost over worrying about a seemingly unacceptable flaw in one’s personality (with regard to the society) , something which may have hurt someone in the past or may have been something trivial (one’s choices , liking) ,which resulted in difference of opinions or a heated argument , can and should be kept as a snapshot in the memory storehouse , only to be recalled in an event of dire requirement.
Acceptance of one’s personality traits , plus or minus can serve as a balance for evaluating a lot of things about and for oneself  .
When we make our personality as a standard for judging others is when differences arise.
If we are to ponder for long over every misdemeanor on our part or even other person’s part, we would stand the chance of losing out on time kept for making pleasanter, enriching memories .
It is better to forgive yourself , at least for relatively subtle issues so as to give your mind a balanced state for it to focus on important issues .

In the long run, the continued accumulation of guilt ridden thoughts can serve as fodder for self depreciation and negativity.

A lot of scope thus opens up for personal progress when the time lost on trivial thoughts is saved.
